Doctors for Children Foundation,
aims to improve the lives of children and young people living with a chronic illness or disability, by means of practical, innovative projects geared to the wishes and needs of children in the Netherlands and based on scientific research.
An umbrella of projects
The work of Doctors for Children shares some common ground with care and well-being and involves multiple projects. Examples include Fitkids, a special fitness and exercise programme, or Cyberpoli, an online platform where young people can find information, meet each other and ask questions to a panel of medical practitioners and experiential experts. The Geld&ik project was set up for children living in poverty in the Netherlands or in low-income families. In addition, we run an extensive web shop with information material sourced by ourselves (books, CD ROMs and films) about the most common chronic illnesses and diseases.
At Doctors for Children, the children often have an important say themselves. We listen to them and involve them in the implementation of our projects. By doing so, we aim to increase participation of children in healthcare. In addition, we also closely work together with the parents, patients' associations, doctors and other care providers.
Asking experts questions safely and easily, contact with fellow sufferers and lots of information about your disease.
Lots of children and youngsters with a chronic illness have questions about their illness they are unable to ask their medical practitioner. Or they simply want to know something about living with their illness now, whereas the next appointment in the outpatient clinic is scheduled one month from now.
Sports is fun and healthy, particularly if you suffer from a disorder. Fitkids gives you a headstart!
Fitkids is a fitness and exercise programme set up by Stichting Fitkids for children aged six to eighteen suffering from a chronic illness, disability or long-term disorder. The children train and move for a period of six to twelve months under the supervision of a (paediatric) physiotherapist.
